During the enemy bombardment preparatory to his attack L/Cpl Hicks stayed at the telephone after several men had been killed on either side of him and the remaining men had been ordered away to a safer position. He thus kept in communication with Brigade HQ and transmitted most valuable information. He showed an utter disregard of danger and set a splendid example of devotion to duty.' He was of great value to his Company Commander in disposing the Company at the forming up position prior to the attack and when attack was launched he showed exceptional qualities as a leader, he kept his men well in hand and inspired them by his example. When his Platoon Commander was wounded he immediately took charge and succeeded in reaching his objective and consolidated his position. He has been previously noticed for gallant work and utter disregard of his own safety.' Returned to Australia 15 February 1918

HINDS, Herbert Joseph

Herbert Joseph Hinds mans his machine gun. A Farmer from Holwell, Tasmania, a single man aged 18, he enlisted at Claremont, Tasmania on 1 August 1916. He required the permission of his parents John Charles & Rebecca Hinds to enlist. He embarked with his Unit from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 20 October 1916 He was Mentioned in Despatches and Awarded, and promulgated, 'London Gazette' No. 30706 (28 May 1918); 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 165 (24 October 1918). On 6 April 1918, he was captured by the Germans in France and remained a POW until he was repatriated to England on the 2 December 1918. He returned to Australia 5 March 1919 on board Nevasa He died during the Anzac Service in Beaconsfield, Tasmania on 25 April 1967
