DOBSON, Morton Wilfred
Service no 858 Private 26th Battalion
(Pte) Morton Wilfred Dobson of Penguin, Tas. who enlisted as a reinforcement in the 26th Battalion on 14 April 1915. Pte Dobson sailed for Egypt on board HMAT Ascanius on 26 June 1915 and joined the 26th Battalion on Gallipoli. He sailed to France with his battalion in 1916. Pte Dobson was wounded in action, and temporarily blinded by the shell burst, on 25 May 1916 and did not return to his unit until 9 August 1916. He was hospitalised with illness in November 1916, rejoining his unit on 28 February 1917. Later that year on 16 June 1917 he was promoted to Corporal. Pte Dobson was killed in action in France on 29 August 1918 , aged 21 years. It was reported he was buried in an isolated grave by the side a bank about 500 yards north of the road to Barleux and 800 yards from the Villers Carbonnel to Perone road, one and a half miles south-south west of Perone. Pte Dobson's remains were later exhumed and re-interred in the Assevillers New British Cemetery, France.

He took six men through a wood still occupied by the enemy, and advanced some 600 yards beyond, over open country and through heavy machine gun fire. He put one gun out of action and rushed another gun, shooting the gunner. He then established a post which commanded the approach to the wood, and held it with his remaining four men for five hours.' Departed on the "Ceramic" for Egypt on 22nd December 1914. Landed at Anzac Cove, on 25th April 1915 from the troop ship Australand, via destroyer and life boat. He was Wounded at Gallipoli. He recovered from his injuries, and then fought in France- at the Somme, Mouquet Farm, and Pozieres when he was again wounded with gunshots to the leg and knee. He returned to Tasmania on discharge 12th June 1917. Darcy George Wilmot Driscoll died in Hobart in 1978, a retired Master of Foreign going ships.
